Sri Lanka, the best Bird watching destination

Sri Lanka, the best Bird watching destination

Being a country near the equator with a diverse ecosystem, Sri Lanka has been recognized as one of the ten global biodiversity hotspots in the world. Sri Lanka is a paradise for nature-based travels due to its’ natural wealth gifted by Mother Nature.

This tropical country located southern tip of the Indian subcontinent has a very rich birdlife. There are about 439 bird species found in Sri Lanka. Among them 236 are residents and 203 are migrants. Since 33 endemic bird species and 68 endemic bird subspecies has recorded the 11% of endemism in birds in Sri Lanka. It is quite remarkable considering the size of the country.

Due to its positioning at the farthest southern point of the Indian subcontinent and no other landmass until the South Pole, Sri Lanka is the regular wintering and breeding ground for the seasonal migratory birds moving from Western Europe, Siberia and Scandinavia. Their arrival starts around August and September every year.

They leave around April and May next year.  In recent years these migratory birds are visiting in large numbers and appeared to stay longer periods of time in Sri Lanka.

Around 70 important bird watching areas have been identified in Sri Lanka. Among them, Sinharaja rain forest, Kanneliya rain forest, Kitulgala Kelani Valley forest reserve, Bundala, Yala, Kumana, Wilpattu, Galoya and Udawalawe national parks, Kalametiya bird sanctuary, Peak wildness sanctuary, Horton Plains and Galway’s land national parks, Knuckles forest reserve, Anawilundawa and Muturajawela wetlands and various rivers, reservoirs, lagoons and mashes throughout the country become the hotspots for birders during the months from November to March. Migratory birds are the highlight of this period.
