Elephants in Sri Lanka (Elephas maximus maximus)
Elephants in Sri Lanka are subspecies of Asian Elephants. Their scientific name is Elephas maximus maximus. Sri Lanka has the highest density of Wild Asian Elephants according to the research report done by the World Animal Protection Organization about conditions for elephants used in tourism in Asia.

Elephants are strong swimmers. However, it is hard to see swimming elephants. But Galoya national park in Sri Lanka is famous for see swimming elephants. Galoya national park serves as the main catchment area of the man-made Senanayake Samudraya Reservoir. There are small islands in this reservoir and elephants are swimming from one island to another. The giant elephants emerging out from the water during the sunset creates fantastic scenery that you cannot see anywhere in the world.
Minneriya Elephants Gathering is world-famous among elephants’ lovers. During the dry season, elephants graze on the grasses growing on the bed of Minneriya reservoir at the Minneriya national park. Wildlife experts confirm that the Minneriya Elephants Gathering is the world’s largest wild Asian elephant grouping at any given time. Sometimes gathering is more than 400 elephants.
Kaudulla Elephants gathering also during the dry season is around 150 – 350 at Kaudulla national park.
Udawalawe national park is the place where you can see the elephants throughout the year. There are few hundreds of elephants roaming within the park.
