- Galle is located 119 km south of Colombo. It was a seaport and main entrepot for the spices since ancient times. Ibn Battuta, a Moroccan traveler was visited Galle in 1342. The whole gamut of Galle and Sri Lanka was changed when a fleet of Portuguese ships was unexpectedly blown off to Galle in 1505 that started the 443 years of the colonial era in Sri Lanka.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES
- The old town of Galle and its fortifications, the World Heritage Site is Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers. The Portuguese initially built a basic fort in Galle. When the Dutch started their control over the area they rebuilt and extensively fortified the fort according to their specifications. A lot of historical, archaeological, and architectural colonial remains are there in Galle fort and the surrounding area. Even today the colonial-era buildings inside the fort, functioning as villas, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants without changing their old fashion.
