Nine Arch Bridge

Nine Arch Bridge

Nine Arch Bridge at the "Gotuwala" village, between Ella and Demodara stations, is one of the railway engineering marvels in Sri Lanka. This viaduct at Gotuwala has sometimes referred "Nine Heart Bridge" or "Nine Skies Bridge".

It was built entirely with blocks of stone and cement without any strengthening iron or concrete. There is an interesting village folktale about this construction. Since this viaduct construction begins World War I broke out and shipping movement restricted resulting in steel consignment was not coming on time or seized by the German Navy. The project came standstill, until local voluntarily came with an idea to build the viaduct with solid stone, bricks and cement only. Finally, the bridge was commissioned in 1921.
