  • The Udawalawe National Park is well-known for its resident population of Sri Lankan elephants, and it is not rare to see herds gather to feed and bathe at waterholes while on even the shortest safaris in the park. There are nearly 500 elephants in the park, which can be found in herds of 50. The park also has mongooses, jackals, water monitor lizards, crocodiles, sloth bears, wild buffalos, sambars, spotted deer, giant squirrels, and the occasional leopard.
