Colonial Tours - Option III - Summer
Forts and Fortifications in Sri Lanka are milestones of the different historical eras of the country. A very few fortresses built by the Sinhalese kings are available today. The world-famous Sigiriya Rock fortress is the masterpiece of the ancient Sri Lankan fortress which belongs to the 5th century AD. The other only available ancient fortress is Mapagala Fortress. It is located near Sigiriya and was built between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
Since the invasion of the Portuguese in 1505 many maritime forts and inland forts were built. Once the Dutch took over from the Portuguese, they control and strengthen the former Portuguese forts and built a few on their own. The British invaders have taken control of those forts in the late 18th century. In the same period, the Sinhalese king also built forts such as the Sitawaka fort and the Balana fort to protect them from the colonizers.
This 9-day tour programme is planned to provide the memorable opportunity to explore masterpieces of Sri Lankan and colonial architecture of forts and fortifications in Sri Lanka. Exploring some British built lighthouses is also a part of this tour programme.
