Visit Kalutara Temple, Lunuganga (Geoffrey Bawa’s House), Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery and Maduganga
This one-day tour has been planned to give a combined experience of Sri Lankan culture, nature and architectural legacy.
Kalutara Temple
Kalutara stupa is a unique stupa with an entirely hollow interior, the only one of its kind in the world. It was built in the 1960s in the ground where the Portuguese were built a fort. The vast echoing interior was decorated with the 74 murals depicting various scenes from the Buddhist Jataka stories (The life story of Load Buddha)
Lunuganga
Lunuganga is a country house at Lunuganga estate that belongs to Geoffrey Bawa, the late renowned architecture. It is a fascinating display of Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural vision that is now maintained by the Geoffrey Bawa Trust.
The estate was a cinnamon garden during the Dutch period and a rubber plantation in the British period. Geoffrey Bawa brought this 15-acre land in 1949 and developed it as a tropical version of European renaissance gardens. Bawa was cremated and his ashes were buried there.
Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery
Kosgoda turtle hatchery is a turtle conservation centre, sponsored by UNDP. You will be able to witness the turtles in their natural habitat at Kosgoda turtle hatchery. They collect the turtle eggs from the seashore at night. Then placed on protected sand to hatch. After 3 days’ baby turtles were released back to sea.
Maduganga Boat safari
The boat traverse through dark-looking caverns formed by the thick mangrove forest and reach the open stretch of water in Maduganaga would be a breathtaking experience. You will be able to witness some aquatic animals and birds in their natural habitat, the traditional pots created by the fishermen to catch prawns and shrimp and crocodile hatchery. You can dangle your feet to get a massage treatment from fish at a fish massage parlour create by fencing part of the river.
