Kalutara Temple

Kalutara stupa is a unique stupa with an entirely hollow interior, the only one of its kind in the world. It was built in the 1960s in the ground where the Portuguese were built a fort. The vast echoing interior was decorated with the 74 murals depicting various scenes from the Buddhist Jataka stories (The life story of Load Buddha)

Lunuganga is a country house at Lunuganga estate that belongs to Geoffrey Bawa, the late renowned architecture. It is a fascinating display of Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural vision that is now maintained by the Geoffrey Bawa Trust.

The estate was a cinnamon garden during the Dutch period and a rubber plantation in the British period. Geoffrey Bawa brought this 15-acre land in 1949 and developed it as a tropical version of European renaissance gardens. Bawa was cremated and his ashes were buried there.
